West was best in the Wales Rugby League Origin Match, the first to be played in seven years, when they ran out 52-16 winners in Porthcawl on Saturday.

The match would have given Wales Dragonhearts coach Craig Fox a number of options on who to select for the forthcoming international series, while South Wales Scorpions coach Dave Clark was also in attendance looking for potential future professional stars.

An early chance for West was squandered when Charles Stephenson wasn’t quite fast enough to jump onto Ian Brooks’ well-placed grubber.

But Brooks’ next creation resulted in a try when his pass opened up a gap for Gareth Howells to run under the sticks, converting it himself.

Straight away it was 12-0 when Brooks created a try for Lloyd Ryland to run home which Howells goaled.

East Wales barraged the West defence and despite West’s efforts, East got a try back. It took until the final tackle of a set which all took place virtually on the West Wales line before Steve Williams fed Dale Tucker to score. Idris Evans converted.

East could have got another but for Ian Brooks catching a high bomb, then turning defence into attack and running 100 metres to score at the other end and increase West’s lead. Howells converted.

There was still time for Marc Roberts to slip down the wing for West’s fourth try which Howells again converted to make the score 24-6 at the interval.

East Wales were first on the board in the second half when Josh Rogers ran home and Evans converted.

There could have been another East Wales try when Steve Williams kicked for Nathan Byrne to try to latch onto, but the chance was well cleared up by Chris Hoppe.

But after that, West Wales stamped their dominance on the game. Roberts scored in the corner for the next try.

Rhys Meredith followed him over three minutes later then Hugh Rosser raced down the wing for West’s seventh try on 58 minutes.

Ryland ran down the wing for his second try and West’s eighth on 62 minutes. Pugh’s kick was missed, then he failed to convert his own try three minutes later.

East Wales grabbed a consolation when Idris Evans went over from short range with Dan Henderson’s conversion hitting the post.

But Ryland completed proceedings when he barged through the defence for his hat-trick after Mark Jones made the groundwork. Pugh converted to make the final score 52-16.
