SW CONFERENCE KICKS OFF

TEAMS GATHER FOR LAUNCH OF NEW SEASON

THE HOOTER has blown and the South Wales Conference season is ready to roll after clubs got together last week to launch the new campaign.

Eight clubs will play in the tournament this season, which kicks off with the Scott Mcrorie Nines at Blackwood Bulldogs ground on Sunday May 5.

Twenty representatives of teams from the border with England to West Wales attended the launch at St Peters RFC – home of the Cardiff Demons club – on Friday and, with national honours through selection for the Welsh Dragonhearts who play Tests throughout the summer, plus the Conference title itself, there is plenty for players to aim for this year.

There are new and returning teams this year in Torfaen Tigers and the Bulldogs plus new outfit Chepstow Borderers, along with established Conference teams Bonymaen Broncos, the reigning Conference champions, Valley Cougars, Newport Titans, the Demons and Bridgend Blue Bulls.

Wales Rugby League National Development Manager Mark Jones said: “We are looking forward to an exciting season with a lot to play for. Clubs have recruited well with many local players plus ex-South Wales Scorpions, Wales Students and former South Wales Hornets men back in the fold.

“It is very pleasing to see teams returning to the game and, with new initiatives, like the North v South Wales Origin game on the fixture list, players have a lot to look forward to.”
