CLARK PLEASED WITH PROGRESS AT SCORPS

HEAD COACH POINTS TO POSITIVES IN PRE-SEASON FRIENDLY AT WIGAN

SOUTH Wales Scorpions’ head coach Dave Clark was pleased at his side’s second and final friendly match away at Wigan Warriors on Sunday.

Despite the Scorpions going down to a 28-8 defeat against Wigan's Academy players, there was a lot for Clark to be positive about. “Looking at where we were three weeks ago, I think we’ve come a long way,” he said. “Offensively our shape was a lot better than what it was in the last game. It’s probably just fine tuning it now.

“We had a lot of good ball in the first half, we just couldn’t convert it into points. It was just that last decision making on whether to pass or run when near to the line that made a difference to us points wise.

“I was pleased with how we progressed during the game - our defence massively improved in the second half and we were more aggressive around the middle of the field. Overall I think we’ve improved since we took on Wigan a few weeks ago. We’ve a couple of weeks before we play London Skolars in our opening Northern Rail Cup match and it’s important for us progress. Come Tuesday night, we’ll evaluate the game, look at a few clips and move in the right direction.”

Clark is pleased that the vast majority of his squad is from Wales, with a number of them coming through the under 18 ranks last year.

“We’re a young side but there’s a lot of potential there, he said. “I think we saw signs of that on Sunday. In the first half we only dropped four balls. Last year we were dropping nine or ten in a half and giving away penalties. Our mentality’s changed a bit, we’ve matured as a team and we’ve four or five 18 year olds coming up from last year playing today. We’re building momentum slowly and going forward.”
