Cwm Rhymni triumph plus all the other results and reports

Pen-Y-Dre School in Merthyr hosted the Champion Schools Central Regional Year Nine Tournament on November 28 which consisted of five schools, St Johns (Aberdare), Aberdare Comp, Pen-Y-Dre, Cwm Rhymni and Cyfartha playing a round robin tournament with two matches running simultaneously.

The first four round results were:

St John’s 4 Aberdare 3,

Pen-Y-Dre 3 Cwm Rhymni 3,

Cwm Rhymni 5 St John’s 2,

Cyfartha 5 Aberdare 3,

Cwm Rhymni 4 Cyfartha 2,

Pen-Y-Dre 3 St John’s 4,

Pen-Y-Dre 4 Cyfartha 5,

Cwm Rhymni 2 Aberdare 2.

After four rounds Cwm Rhymni headed the table by two points with all games completed. This meant the winner of St John’s against Cyfartha would progress.

Cyfartha started the stronger with the impressive Alex Meeson scoring two tries and setting up the third, as Cyfartha took a healthy lead, but the second half saw a St John’s fightback and with one minute to go the score was poised at 3 – 3.

A Cyfartha handling error gave the possession to St John’s, but great try line defence from Cyfartha kept St John’s out at the game finished as a draw meaning Cwm Rhymni progress to the semi – finals.

Meanwhile, last Friday (November 30) Presceli School held the inaugural Champion Schools Ceredigion Regional Year Nine Tournament.

The event consisted of a triangular series with Presceli, Lampeter and Newcastle Emlyn playing rugby league for the first time. The teams were very evenly matched with Preseli beating Newcastle Emlyn 24 -18, then going on to beat Lampeter 18 - 12, with the final match seeing Lampeter share the spoils with Newcastle Emlyn 18 – 18. This meant Presceli won the tournament and will now progress through to the next round. The feedback from both players and teachers was excellent with all involved fully enjoying their rugby league experience. With the huge increase of schools participating in Rugby League in West Wales will only strengthen the player base for the new West Wales Regional Performance Centre.

Then, on Monday December 3, Dyffryn Taf hosted the Champion Schools West Wales Regional Year 11 Tournament. The teams were Dyffryn Taf, Stradey and Greenhill (Tenby).

The first fixture saw the hosts play Stradey who were competing for the first time in this event. Solid defences from both sides meant a scoreless first half, the game wore on Stradey began to get a feel of the game and scored to two tries through half back Rhodri Rees which he both converted to make the final score 12 – 0 to Stradey.

In the next match Stradey played Greenhill, Stradey’s size and strength in the forwards was too strong for the Greenhill pack. Greenhill tackled their hearts out, but fatigue set in and Stradey scored 2 tries through Kalem Williams and Steffan Roberts the latter converted by Rhodri Rees to make the final score 10 – 0 to Stradey. In their first season Stradey now go on to compete against Bishopston(Swansea) in the next round.

The final match was a local derby between Dyffryn and Greenhill. After a slow start, the game erupted with huge hits coming from both defences. Dyffryn raced into an 18 -0 lead with tries from Fuller Diarro, Conner Bowen, Joe Twoose and Marcus Watland. Greenhill never gave up were rewarded with 2 tries from Sam Lewis and Geraint Harris for a final score 18-10 to Dyffryn.

Wales Rugby League would like to thank Pen-Y-Dre, Presceli and Dyffryn Taf Scools for hosting the events and all the teachers and coaches who brought the teams to the competitions and made them such a success.
