South Wales Academy side to hold open trials
The South Wales Under 18 Academy Rugby League side are holding trials
The South Wales Under 18 Academy Rugby League side are holding open trials for players to compete in the 2012 Valvoline Academy competition.
This is the premier under 18 competition in Rugby League where the South Wales side will take on Super League and Championship outfits throughout the spring and summer. It is a big step on the player pathway in terms of a long term future in the sport.
Recent graduates include Rhodri Lloyd (Wigan Warriors), Ollie Olds (Leeds Rhinos), Jack Pring (Leeds Rhinos) and Dale Evans (South Wales Scorpions) with many more players making the step up to professional Rugby League.
The trials are aiming to identify players that are looking to get started in Rugby League and give them a taste of what the sport is like to play. With Wigan Warriors now a major support partner for Wales Rugby League, the opportunities for players at under 18 level who may not have thought about it before, are now endless.
Dan Clements, Head of Performance for Wales Rugby League, said: "These trials are invaluable to the programme as they give players who might never have had a chance to play Rugby League before the opportunity to impress and gain a place in the South Wales Academy.
"Only last year, stand out players such as David Palmer came from an open trial having never played League before. With Wigan Warriors' support, players can see that there is a huge opportunity for them to progress."
