Newport school looking for funding for Cup Final

St Joseph's Comprehensive School from Newport have become the first We

St Joseph's Comprehensive School from Newport have become the first Welsh school to qualify for a Carnegie Champion Schools Rugby League Final in five years and now they are looking for help with funding to assist their trip to London.

Their Year 8 final, which is against Temple Moor school from Leeds, is one of seven games that will take place at the Twickenham Stoop on Friday August 26. The Year 7 Boys Final is played at Wembley Stadium a day later as a curtain raiser for the Carnegie Challenge Cup Final.

Stefan Sankala, the former Cardiff Demons and Wales Student international, a sports teacher at the school, is the coach of the St Joseph's Rugby League side and he says that they are looking forward to the trip.

"The lads are preparing well," said Sankala, who has also coached Crusaders' and Wales' junior sides. "We're training twice a week to make sure that the keep up their Rugby League skills and they're all looking forward to the game in August.

"We need to raise over £4,000 to be able to pay for the whole squad to go. Hopefully we'll be getting a bucket collection at this Saturday's Wales v Scotland A international in Caerphilly which will be a help. The lads are already doing a lot, fundraising throughout the school, selling the match programmes to people and selling photos of the regional final win, but we do need some more help in donations and sponsorship so please contact me if you can do something for us.

"We have a number of tickets to sell for the Challenge Cup Final at Wembley Stadium a day later. Buying these tickets from us will help fund the school's trip to London as we receive a good profit from the sales. If you're going to London and haven't bought your Challenge Cup Final ticket, please give me a call on 07812 003591. It would greatly assist us."

Open to every secondary school in England, Wales and Scotland - the Champion Schools tournament was re-launched back in 2002 when the RFL joined with the English Schools Rugby League.

Since then it has exploded and the competition has helped launch the careers of a whole host of Super League players including internationals Sam Tomkins, Joe Westerman and Richie Myler, while the Welsh successes have been headlined by Olly Olds (now Crusaders) and Rhys and Ben Evans (both now Warrington Wolves), formerly of Brynteg High School from Bridgend who won the Year 7 Final at the Millennium Stadium in 2005.

Rugby League has seen an immense growth in schools over the last few years and this is crucial for the development and future of the sport. Carnegie Champion Schools plays a vital role in introducing the game to an ever increasing number of young people throughout the United Kingdom.

In the early days this competition involved just a few hundred teams from the north of England whereas this year's tournament has seen a total of 1,678 teams take part, including over 158 from Wales.

Overall 27,537 students took to the field which is up by 2,911 from 2010 and a staggering growth of 22,369 since 2002.
