Conference Report 2011 Week 3

In the only game played in the Premiership this weekend the Newport

By Rob Davies

In the only game played in the Premiership this weekend the Newport Titans won a thriller away to Torfaen Tigers 34-38.

The Tigers were without five first choice forwards but they still stood toe to toe with the Titans in a game that was brilliantly entertaining for those in attendance.

The lead changed hands several times in a feisty encounter that saw both captains in Tigers Daryl Carter and Titans Adam Davies sin binned for fighting, but the indiscipline cost Torfaen more in the end as they gave away numerous silly penalties.

Unfortunately during the match Torfaen lost their influential fullback Mike Davies who was badly injured in an alleged spear tackle, a tackle which also lead to Titans Adam Davies being put on report by the referee and the incident could be further looked in to.

Daryl Carter crossed twice for the Tigers with Chris Wannell, Rob Gardner, Matthew Davies and Rhys Selway also crossing, with Carter also adding five goals.

Titans scorers were Nathan Bird, Jarrad Hinnem, Andy Whittingham, Rhys Meredith, Adam Davies and a brace for Dale Tucker with Callum Rowland kicking 5 from 7.

In the Championship, the Wildcats bounced back from last week's 20 point defeat to beat the Steelers 32-12.

The home team scored early on through Richard Phillips before Luke Williams exploited a hole in the Steelers defence and ran 80 metres to score under the posts, Ceri Morgan converting for a 10-0 lead.

The Steelers responded with an unconverted try from Ryan Pugh before Kane Evans raced over for the Wildcats third, Morgan again converting for a 16-4 half time lead.

The second half saw a mini fight back from NPT with unconverted tries from Daniel Gully and Rhys Griffiths, but as the second half went on the young Wildcats side asserted there dominance with second tries for Phillips and Williams, Ian Morris then bagged the home sides sixth with Morgan and Brendan Foley each kicking a goal.

The newly formed Bonymaen Broncos picked up their second big win in the Championship with an empathetic home victory over the Devils.

The Broncos started the game at a blistering pace and scored the first try of the game in the first minute through full back Richard Williams. An error at the restart by the Bonymaen lead to a lot of pressure by the Devils and they were finally rewarded with a try by their man of the match and scrum half Owain Williams.

But this was to be Dyffryn's only score of the game as the Swansea side went on to claim another 10 tries, all of which were converted by outside half Ian Brooks.

Richard Williams lead the way again with his second hat trick in in two games which Chris Stokes claimed a brace of tries. Other scorers were Neil White, Chris Hoppe, Luke Myatt, Karl Newman, Nick Clancy and Robert Jones.

As with their win over the Steelers two weeks ago the man of the match for Bonymaen was Chris Stokes who's work rate throughout the game was excellent.

Next up for the high scoring Broncos is a trip to Merthyr to take on the Wildcats and they hope to keep there fine home form in their first away game.
