Garyn Smith named Wales under 16 captain v England

Wales have named Garyn Smith from Pontypridd as captain of their under

Wales have named Garyn Smith from Pontypridd as captain of their under 16 schoolboys side to take on England in Caerphilly on Good Friday (kick-off 2.30pm).

Smith is also captain of the Crusaders' under 16 side after starting out at the junior ranks of Tydfil Wildcats Rugby League Club.

The Welsh take on England in the annual Good Friday international that returns after a two-year gap and Aled James, Player Performance Manager for Wales, believes that Garyn, who goes to Pontypridd High School, is the right man to lead the Welsh.

"Garyn is an exceptional player," James said. "He has great footwork and carries strong. He played a significant role in the Crusaders' under 16's victory over Salford. He led the team well and led from the front. He trains hard, has all the attributes of a leader and all the boys look up to him."

James will coach the Wales under 16s against England while his South Wales Scorpions team-mate and fellow Welsh international Lewis Mills will be assistant coach.

Wales Rugby League will release the full playing squad of 18 next Wednesday.

Admission to Wales v England on Good Friday 22nd April (kick-off 2.30pm) costs just £3 for adults and £1 concessions.
