St Josephs qualify for national school quarters
Newport-based school St Josephs have made it through to the quarters
Newport-based school St Josephs have made it through to the quarter-finals of the national Carnegie Champions Schools competition after beating London school Ravenswood 48-12.
On a hot day in Newport, St Josephs raced into a 12-0 lead with the first two sets of the day as first powerful loose forward Rollin Menayese burst through and then his brother Elvis Msimba, playing in the centre, outpaced the defence, Menayese adding the extras on both occasions.
Msimba added a second before sloppy mistakes allowed Ravenswood to score one of their own to give them hope.
Dummy half Joe Fullwood and stand-off Jordan Davies posed all sorts of problems to the Ravenswood defence with their fancy footwork. This coupled with fullback Dan Butts making good metres with every kick return, laid the platform for Msimba to complete his hatrick and Menayese to add his second to make the half-time score 28-4.
Ravenswood started the second half strongly but St Joes defended aggresively with forwards Keenan Bird, Brad Yearnsley, Arad Samsanov and Max Williams worthy of mention.
St Joes wethered this storm before Menayese and Msimba both took their totals to four apiece. Second rower Max Williams then went over and Rollin Menayese kicked his sixth goal.
With the game over as a contest, ill discipline from St Joes gave Ravenswood field position to score two late consolation tries.
