Cwm Rhymni qualify for Welsh Year 7 school semis

Ysgol Gyfun Cwm Rhymni's year 7 side qualified for the Welsh National

Ysgol Gyfun Cwm Rhymni's year 7 side took the first step onto the road to Wembley Stadium after qualifiying for the Welsh National semi-finals of the Carnegie Champions School Competition when they won the Central Region Wales Rugby League section.

The school could eventually take on the best schools that British Rugby League has to offer with the Grand Final being at Wembley before the Carnegie Challenge Cup Final in August.

The Central Region competition was held at Afon Taf Comprehensive on Tuesday November 23th, in bitterly cold but dry weather.

Despite the temperatures, the tournament was a huge success with five schools playing out a series of highly competitive games in a round robin format.

The tournament consisted of hosts Afon Taf, Cwm Rhymni, St John's, Cyfartha and Pen Y Dre with Cwm Rhymni winner all their games to top the group and qualify for the semi-finals. The group results were:

Cwm Rhymni 24 Pen Y Dre 0

St John 28 Pen Y Dre 0

St John's 12 Cyfartha 12

Cwm Rhymni 16 St John 0

Pen Y Dre 4 Cyfartha 16

Cwm Rhymni 12 Cyfartha 4

Afon Taf 32 Pen Y Dre 4

The tournament produced some outstanding individual performances which included Christian Niangonbasi (St Josephs), Ryan Lewis (Hartridge), Owen Williams (Brynmawr), Aaron Morgan (Brynmawr), Will Thomas (Croesyceilog), James Meyer (Monmouth) and Lewis Hopkins (Llantarnam).

"This was an excellent tournament with highly contested, free flowing games," said Wales Rugby League's Development Manager, Mark Jones. "It is very rewarding to see so many young children and schools participating in rugby league tournaments and I hope they are hooked for life with our sport."
