Torfaen earn first win of the season at Cardiff

Torfaen Tigers chairman Matt Cummings was delighted at his side’s emphatic 48-14 away at Cardiff Blue Dragons in the first match of the Southern Conference League season.

In a hard-fought game, that saw two sinbinnings from each side, the scores were level at 6-6 on 25 minutes, after which time the Tigers took control, scoring four tries in 15 minutes to give them a 26-6 half-time lead.

Liam Silver scored the first of his hat-trick of tries on seven minutes with Lewis Handley converting, but it wasn’t long before Cardiff were level as Duane Iles went over with Idris Evans converting.

However tries from Silver, Byron Edwards, Wes Cunliffe and Nathan Touhig and two conversions from Ieuan-Rhys Beal gave Torfaen their impressive half-time advantage.

Cardiff struck first after the interval with Iles getting the second of his hat-trick, completing it mid-way through the half.

But Torfaen again had the upper hand through much of this period scoring four tries as Silver and Cunliffe (2) both completed hat-tricks, whilst Beal also touched down once as well as kicking three conversions.

Cummings said: “It’s nice to open the season with a good win. We had a lot of players missing today, and a few making their debuts, so there’s plenty of positives for us to take forward from today.

“We’re now looking forward to our first home game of the season against Swindon St George next Saturday at New Panteg RFC, which will be a big event as we’re also helping to launch the new WRL charity publication to aid our former coach Scott Bessant.

“It’ll be good to follow up with a first home win which will really give us a good start to the season.”
