Coleg y Cymoedd to open up Llanelli hub of their rugby league programme

Coleg y Cymoedd, in partnership with West Wales Raiders and Wigan Warriors, are launching a Llanelli hub of their rugby league programme.

Primarily based in Rhondda Cynon Taff and Caerphilly, the college are branching further west to link up with South Wales’ only semi-professional club, who announced a partnership with Wigan last month.

Mark Jones, Cymoedd’s head of rugby league, said: “These are exciting times in youth elite rugby league in Wales with the new partnership with Wigan Warriors. As the only Category 3 College Academy in Wales, we would like to give more opportunities to players who would like to study a BTEC sport course with a full time rugby league programme throughout South Wales.

“Coleg y Cymoedd are looking to develop a teaching hub in Llanelli for the players to study in West Wales but then come together as a squad with Ystrad Mynach on training and match days. This would allow us to compete against the Super League colleges on a weekly basis. We also have many university pathway links and this BTEC course will allow you to achieve enough UCAS points to apply for your chosen university. You will also leave with a RLEF Level 1 coaching certificate and a WRL match official qualification.”

Peter Tiffin, CEO of West Wales Raiders, said: “It’s always been a major priority of ours to make sure that Coleg Y Cymoedd had a lot of support from us from the beginning. Over the first year we have been in regular contact and helped where we can and the partnership is strong. After several discussions a west hub of the college made so much sense and now with our connections with Wigan Warriors there was no better time to begin. It’s a fantastic time to be involved within the sport with so many opportunities available.”
