North Wales Crusaders U12s continue to shine with victory over Rylands Tiger Sharks

North Wales Crusaders U12s put in another superb all-round performance to beat Warrington-based Rylands Tiger Sharks on Sunday.

They took to the field at Queensway Stadium ahead of Crusaders' League 1 fixture against Coventry Bears and followed up their stunning debut performance against St Helens with another class showing.

Crusaders were on their metal from the get go, putting the Rylands team under huge pressure with their aggressive defence and tough tackling.

Rylands found it hard to contain the North Wales pack, which gave the halfbacks a solid platform to release the backline.

Action from Crusaders' win over Rylands

At half-time, the home team had built up an 18–0 lead with tries from Greg Thomas, Iwan Hughes and Douglas Maciver. Fullback Hughes added all three conversions.

The beginning of the second-half saw Rylands mount a spirited fightback, but this was met with brilliant defence from Crusaders.

Time after time, they thwarted every threat Rylands posed with some terrific tackling and a real desire to defend their line.

Further tries from Tom Himsworth and a second from the relentless Greg Thomas, plus two more conversions from the deadly boot of Iwan Hughes, gave the home side a 30–12 lead going into the final five minutes.

To their credit, Rylands never gave up and were rewarded with two late converted tries.

However, this was Crusaders' day. All 18 squad members made a contribution to the outcome, but the overall performances both individually and collectively are what will have pleased North Wales' coaches.

The defence was rock solid for most of the game and the attack had some real threat about it, with options on both sides of the field, half backs who were calm and measured in their execution, some real punch in the pack and a fullback who is a huge threat when he gets the ball.

Coaches Allen Jones and Rikki Davies were full of praise for their players.

“We have now played two established North West Counties sides in the past two weeks and have put in two super performances," Jones said.

"We are delighted for all the boys. Their hard work, determination and skill is evident in the performances they have delivered.

"They play with a smile on their faces and are having fun, which is great to see."

There is still much to improve upon for this relatively new group, which is still growing and getting to grips with rugby league.

However, there is real talent, potential and promise within this group and the future looks very bright going forward.

Crusaders U12s are still looking for new players, regardless of any rugby experience. School Year 7 and 6 pupils are eligible to join this exciting new team.
