University sides go into final fixtures before Christmas

Wales’ university sides go into their final match of the year tomorrow (Wednesday) with Swansea riding high with a 100% record at the top of BUCS Rugby League Western 1A.

This week’s fixtures see Swansea travelling to Aberystwyth University, who have yet to record a win this season.

University of South Wales, who have shown considerable improvement on last season, travel to University of Bristol, whilst Cardiff Metropolitan University, who are currently second in the league, host University of Exeter.

Meanwhile, in the BUCS Northern 2A League, Bangor University will be searching for their first win of the season when they host University of Manchester before taking on Lancaster in a rearranged match next Wednesday.

Swansea were demoted from the Premier League last season and are looking for a quick promotion back to the highest level of the Student game. With strong links with West Wales Raiders the new professional side in Llanelli, the Warpigs will be in with a good chance of doing just that.

Peter Tiffin from the Raiders said: “With our second year being involved with Swansea University we understood what things we needed to work on from the previous season.

“Our main aim was to gain promotion straight back up to the Premier League, but if we were to achieve this we needed to rectify a lot of things both on and off the field and all the boys understood this.

“We were very lucky with the first couple of fixtures we had as the majority were home and this gave us a very strong platform going forward, Our strongest fixtures to date have been the other Welsh universities, with very exciting scorelines.

“As we have come to the half way point of our season we are happy with the results so far especially to be undefeated in our seven league fixtures but we still have areas that we need to work on ready for the remaining league games and the forthcoming Cup.

“It’s a very exciting time here at Swansea University as the mood in the camp is fantastic and everyone understands what they want to achieve for not only this season but also the next couple of years.”

The reincarnated USW rugby league side are into their second season and according to head coach Rob Davies, they have added quality and quantity to their squad this year. The facts back this up with a registered squad of 32 players and currently sitting third in the BUCS Western 1A table with three wins from five games, a stark contrast to this time last year where they lost their opening six fixtures.

Davies went on to add: "At the start of the season, we targeted a top three finish and a good cup run as we embark on year two of what is a three year plan to re-establish the sport as a serious option within the university. We are far from the finished article but improving every week and have fortunate that the new year sees us with one away and three home fixtures so hopefully we can put some pressure on the top two.”

The competitions resume after the Christmas break.
