ANSELL READY FOR WALES DEBUT IF CALLED UPON

After being contacted on Tuesday morning about the posibility of linking up with the Wales squad, Danny Ansell says he'll be "ready to do a job" if he's called upon.

Ansell, who is a halfback at League 1 club Hunslet RLFC, has been drafted in to The Dragons' 2017 Rugby League World Cup Qualifiers squad because of injuries and unavailability of players.

It is a boost for John Kear and his coaching staff, as the 24-year-old is in solid form after 11 tries in 22 appearances for Hunslet during the 2016 campaign.

On his call-up, Ansell said: "Barry Eaton put my name forward. I knew I was eligible because he's my uncle and he's played for Wales previously.

"Chris Thair got in touch with me on Tuesday morning, asked if I was available for the weekend and it took off from there.

"At first, I thought it was one of my pals with a prank call but, as soon as Chris sent the email over, I knew it was all for real.

"It shocked me a little bit, but it's something I'm very proud of."

Four days after the original phone call was made, Ansell may put on the Welsh jersey for the first time in Monza.

However, if he does, he will relish the opportunity and give his all to make sure that Wales pick up a victory in their crucial World Cup Qualifier.

"I'm pleased with my own personal performance in 2016 - it's the most tries I've scored in a season - and it's something I'll look to build on as well," Ansell said.

"If I get the call-up to the 17, I'll be ready to do a job.

"It's been highlighted [how important this match is for us] so I'd love nothing more than to help Wales get to the World Cup next year.

"I'll speak to John [Kear] later and see what his ideas are. My first session is the captain's run, but the boys have made me feel really welcome and I'm looking forward to taking part and showing what I can do.

"I just want to get the nod to be in the 17 and, hopefully, do myself justice tomorrow if I do."
