Wales Rugby League are delighted to announce that their first World Cup qualifying match, which is against Serbia at Parc Stebonheath in Llanelli on Saturday 15 October, is to be shown live on S4C.

It is the first time that the Welsh language broadcaster has shown live Rugby League since 2008 and the first time that the Welsh national side has featured live on the station since the 1995 World Cup.

Match kick-off will be at 3pm, with S4C coverage starting at 2.45pm.

The match TV coverage will be available in both the Welsh and English languages throughout the UK. Live English-language commentary will be available on the red button service.

Wales, who won the European Championships last year after beating France, Scotland and Ireland, need to overcome a three-team group this autumn. They travel to Monza to take on Italy a fortnight later on Saturday 29th October, in their only other group game.

The winner of this group goes straight through to the 2017 Rugby League World Cup finals in Australia and Papua New Guinea, with the runners up taking on the second place side from the group involving Ireland, Spain and Russia, in a play-off at the ground of newly promoted Super League club, Leigh Centurions, on November 4th.

Wales’ head coach John Kear, who is also a regular TV pundit, is delighted that S4C have chosen to broadcast this massive game and expresses the importance of having the Rugby League World Cup on television.

“This is tremendous news,” he said. “S4C showed highlights of our European Championship winning campaign and the fact that they’ve now chosen to show our World Cup game against Serbia live and free to air is testimony to the improved performances of the squad and awareness of the game.

“We need to ensure that we play well and I do know from last year, that if we play well, then we will win.

“S4C’s broadcast will bring a new audience to the game and we want the television public to enjoy it. We now need to ensure that the ground is full to add to the atmosphere and then nail that result.”

S4C Sports Editor, Sue Butler said, "We're very pleased to include live coverage of this Rugby League World Cup match as part of our sports portfolio. We wish them the very best of luck as they represent Wales on an international stage  and look forward to providing this exclusively live broadcast. "
