This year’s annual North Wales v South Wales encounter, played at Rhosllanerchrugog RFC near Wrexham on Sunday, ended in a 44-all draw with some fantastic Rugby League played by both sides.

The North Wales side was primarily selected from the up and coming Crusaders junior section, whilst the South Wales side came from the best of the players competing in the previous week’s South-Wales based West v East origin game.

Both regions fielded two complete sides to give plenty of players a run out, with North Wales also fielding some players from the under 17 age bracket.

As a result of the game, Morgan Johnson, Owen Roberts and William Mills, all from North Wales Crusaders, have been added to the full Wales under 16 training squad.

Allen Jones, the North Wales RL development manager, said: “This was a very positive day for Wales RL Youth development.  Nearly 50 boys took part in this fixture.  From a Crusaders point of view, 12 boys played their first ever competitive game of RL, so fair play to them as it was a real tough baptism but they were superbly supported by the more experienced boys.

“Huge Thanks to referee Steve Allen who controlled the game really well and to all the South Wales players, coaches, family and friends for making the trip up to a very sunny Rhos.”

Peter Tiffin, team manager for the Wales under 16 side, said: “It was an amazing day of rugby league at Rhosllanerchrugog and it was fantastic to see so many young rugby league players involved in a thrilling match.

“Massive thanks to Allen Jones and his team for hosting us for the day and his players have developed with some great talent on show. Congratulations to the three North Wales players who have been selected to be a part of the Welsh Select for the remainder of the season. We now go back to some more training and team bonding sessions as we prepare for our next fixture in this years under 16’s programme.”
