St John's progress to Year 9 Final

St John's too strong for gallant Y Gwyndu

Welsh Schools Year 9 Semi Final

St John’s v Y Gwyndu

Both teams took to the filed looking to claim the place in the Wales Rugby League Schools Finals Day against Ysgol Y Strade.

With the weather providing perfect conditions, no wind at all and the hottest day of the year to date (19°C), it was setting up to be a lovely afternoon of rugby league.

Both sides have benefited greatly from the new WRL initiative, Players to Leaders, with no fewer than 10 players involved across both teams representing East Wales.  The Players to Leaders programme is a youth development programme currently being delivered for under 14-16s for the best players in the school and community game, culminating in a 3-way Origin fixture between East and West Wales.

With perfect weather conditions, it was guaranteed to be an open game of rugby, with an opportunity for good hands and firm ground for the players to stretch their legs.

A spectacle of attacking rugby was seen from both sides, scoring tries for fun.  However, it was St John’s who were slightly stronger attacking the edges and demonstrating some clinician finishing as they ran out winners 68 - 24.

Y Gwyndu were still in the game at half time with the scores at 30 - 8, however, St John’s attacking flair was too much to contain as they ran in 7 tries in the 2nd half to Y Gwyndu’s 3.

St John’s will now progress into the final against Strade at the start of May (date to be confirmed) for the WRL Schools Finals Day that will include finals for Year 8, 9 10 and 11.
