Year 8 Central and East Champions Schools Comp

Glantaf progress to Welsh Year 8 Final

Friday the 27th of November saw both the East and Central festivals being played at Glantaf School.

The Central was made up of Cwm Rhymni, Y Gwyndu and Aberdare on pitch 1 with the East consisting of St Joseph’s (Newport), Monmouth and Glantaf on pitch 2.

In an entertaining afternoon of rugby league the top team from each group would then contest the Welsh Semi-Final, with the winner progressing straight into the final in April.

Group 1 saw a strong Y Gwyndu side win both their pool games over Aberdare and Cwm Rhymni, with Cwm Rhymni winning the other fixture over Aberdare.

On Pitch 2, Glantaf won both their games convincingly against Monmouth and St Joseph’s, with St Joseph’s winning the remaining fixture over Monmouth.

This meant both British Champions Schools Winners last year Glantaf and Y Gwyndu would progress from their respective groups and play each other with the Welsh Final place at stake.

The game proved to be a war of attrition with both sets of forwards grinding each other down and looking for an opportunity to gain the upper hand.  Unfortunately for Y Gwyndu, Glantaf showed all their experience from last year’s run in the Champions Schools and played some well-structured attacking rugby league.

At half time Glantaf were 4 tries to the good (16-0), having used the width of the pitch well and finished off some good attacking rugby.

At half time it was decided that Y Gwyndu would borrow a couple of Cwm Rhymni players to replenish their squad.

The second half was to be a much closer affair with Glantaf only crossing twice and Y Gwyndu digging deep to score a solo try.

The final score:

Glantaf 24 – 4 Y Gwyndu
