Craig Kopzcak given Wales captain role again

Wales coach John Kear has re-appointed the experienced forward Craig Kopzcak as their captain for the 2015 European Cup campaign after Lloyd White withdrew due to a knee injury.

Wales coach John Kear has re-appointed the experienced forward Craig Kopzcak as their captain for the 2015 European Cup campaign after Lloyd White withdrew due to a knee injury.

The 28-year old captained Wales in 2012-2013 and is set to win his 15th Welsh cap on Friday in Wrexham against Scotland (kick-off 8pm). He made his debut for Wales in 2007 in a 50-10 friendly win over Papua New Guinea.

Last year Wales were captained by the now retired Peter Lupton in Kopzcak’s absence through injury.

“I’m immensely proud to be asked again,” Kopzcak said. “I captained Wales in the last World Cup so hopefully I can lead from the front with my experience and show some dominance.”

Wales are in their first full week of training now in preparation for Friday’s encounter at Glyndwr University Racecourse Stadium and Kopzcak says that winning is the only thing on their minds.

“It’s been an enjoyable camp so far and long may it continue,” he said. “Our aim is to go out there and win the trophy. I think we’re in with a big chance of doing that. We’ve a lot stronger side this time around as has been mentioned by John previously. We’ve got the talent there so you never know what will happen.

“Scotland have a few key players so we’ll have to be on our toes on Friday. Danny Brough is the obvious danger man but people like Danny Addy, who has played really well for Bradford this season, will also be out there. It’s going to be a very tough encounter but we need to go out there with a willing mentality and bring it home.”

Wales coach John Kear said: “Craig has been in camp from minute one, he’s established himself as a leader and the example he has set in team meetings and on the field has been first class. He’s been captain before and we’re happy to go with him again.”

Wales will be announcing their 19-man squad to face Scotland tomorrow but Kear says that a decision on the line-up has already been made.

“I’m delighted with what I’ve seen up until now,” he said. “It’s very exciting to see how the team is going to play on Friday as, without being disrespectful to last year’s group, we’ve more established players than last year, more from Super League, so we’ll hopefully produce a better effort results wise than last year.

“We know exactly who we’re going with on Friday and we’re practising with that set-up now so the players are comfortable with the combinations we have there.”
