On Wednesday 7th October, Llanelli-based Conference South club, Raiders Rugby League, partnered up with Carmarthenshire’s Communities First to produce a Super 9s Schools Tournament.

This was the first event that both organisations produced together. Schools from Carmarthenshire and Swansea all entered in what was for most of them their first competitive Rugby League competition.

The day began and ended with Ysgol Gyfun Ystalyfera and Ysgol Glan Y Mor Year 10s giving their all at Trimsaran RFC.

As an array of games were played the tournament took most of the day, there was plenty of talent on show which was fantastic to see for the future of Rugby League in West Wales.

The finals saw Ystalyfera year 9 and 10 both take the trophies for this year’s Super 9s Schools Champions but both Bryngwyn and Glan Y Mor gave their all in each final, which also saw Jordan Thomas from Bryngwyn win the player of the Tournament for his age group.

Ioan Bebb, teacher and coach at Ysgol Gyfun Ystalyfera, said: “Many thanks to the Raiders Rugby League for organizing the day. Ysgol Gyfun Ystalyfera are proud to support the club, and Rugby League in general, in Wales.”

Peter Tiffin, team manager of the Raiders Rugby League added: “We have only recently been working with the local schools so to see them all competing today was a great pleasure. The main reason we wanted to produce such a tournament with Communities First was to introduce Rugby League to the children of the community. We are really looking forward to continuing our work with Communities First and the local schools as we hope to see our next event take place at the end of October. We would also like to thank Trimsaran RFC for the use of their facilities.”
