Aber Valley and Bridgend open with wins

Last year’s Welsh Conference league leaders and Grand Final winners both recorded wins in week 1 of the 2015 Welsh Conference which started in style at Cardiff Arms Park on Sunday.

Hosts Cardiff City RL were unable to make home advantage count as the experience and power of Senghenydd’s Aber Valley Wolves in the second half gave them a 42-16 win in front of a big crowd before the South Wales Scorpions v North Wales Crusaders Big Welsh Derby game.

The first half was a see-saw contest which saw the home side go in with a 16-14 lead thanks to tries from Matt Williams, Chris True and Dan Crimmins, two of which were converted by Dan Henderson.

But the Wolves scored 28 unanswered points after the break.

Man of the match Lewis Bowden got a brace of tries for the Wolves, as did Gareth Hutchinson while Alex Hogg, Kieron Hughes, James Hallet and Dai Evans claimed one apiece. James Hallet kicked five conversions.

Wolves coach Bobby Andrews said: “It was a tough game to start with but the boys found their patterns and structure in the second half. Co-coach Gareth Short and I were very pleased with the debuts of six new players due to injuries and unavailability and the lads enjoyed playing in a great venue with a good crowd.”

Immediately before, Cardiff City B went down 58-14 to Valley Cougars B in a friendly match.

On the same day, around 150 fans were at Pyle RFC to watch 2015 Welsh Champions Bridgend Blue Bulls edge Gwendraeth Valley Raiders 40-38.

The winning try was scored by Tom Ansen in the final minute. Man of the match was Bridgend’s Dai Griggs.
