Valley Cougars won a classic encounter against Torfaen Tigers 28-24 at Cwmbran RFC on Friday night in the RFC Conference League South, using an extra man and the second half slope to their advantage.

A mass brawl midway through the second half led to two Tigers players and one Cougar being given straight reds by James Jones but that incident didn’t detract from what was a great game of Rugby League.

Less than 10 minutes into the game and despite going up a hill worse than Batley’s, Marcus Webb set up John Sanigar to give Cougars an early lead. Webb converted.

Not long after that and Liam Price forced his way over for Cougars’ second. Webb missed the kick but Cougars were 10-0 up and cruising.

Torfaen struck back just after the half hour mark through Dai Thomas which Matt Cummins converted and from the next attack, Cummins slipped through for a try of his own, converting himself, turning the game on its head.

Then, just on half-time, Micki Witts picked up a superb cross kick to score in the corner which Cummins converted well to make the score 18-10 to the home side at the break.

The dramatics came a little over five minutes into the second half when a try saving tackle on Dan Davies led to the fight. Cougars scored from the resulting penalty as Lee Goddard ran over. Webb missed the kick and Tigers were still 18-14 up.

Davies wasn’t to be denied, slipping through to level the scores from Cougars next attack with Webb converting to make it 20-18 before Ben Williams defied the odds and broke through the Cougars defence to score. Cummins added the extras to make it 24-20.

This classic on what was turning out to be a rainy night had yet more dramatics. A good passing move led to Gethin King scoring in the corner to level it at 24-all. Webb missed the kick and there were just 12 minutes left on the clock.

Five minutes later came the winner. From a set following a scrum, Goddard scored in the corner with Webb’s conversion attempt hitting the post.

Tigers almost clinched it. With two minutes to go they won a penalty and started the set on Cougars’ 30 metre line. But the final play ended in the ball being kicked into touch followed immediately by the final whistle.
