Cougars face Leeds trip in Challenge Cup

Valley Cougars have been handed a tough away trip to Leeds- based side Outlon Raiders in the second round of the Ladbrokes Challenge Cup.

Valley Cougars have been handed a tough away trip to Leeds-based side Outlon Raiders in the second round of the Ladbrokes Challenge Cup.

The Cougars beat fellow Conference South side Leicester Storm in the first round at home in Treharris last weekend but know they will get a far tougher test at the Kingstone Press National Conference Premier Division side.

The draw was made at Oulton’s ground and was beamed live over the internet and Cougar’s head coach Paul Emanuelli and assistant Dafydd Hellard witness proceedings in the valleys.

“This wasn’t the tie we were hoping for as we’re very strong at home so that would have been better for us,” Emanuelli said. “It’s going to be a tough trip but we’ll enjoy it, go up there and give it our best shot.”

“We’ll prepare in the same we were prepared for the first round and we’ll give it a good go,” Hellard added.

The home teams were drawn by Leeds Rhinos and former Oulton Raiders winger Ryan Hall and the away teams were drawn by Oliver Holmes, a 2014 Challenge Cup finalist with Castleford Tigers and an ex-Normanton Knights junior.

Ryan Hall said: “It was an honour to be part of this tonight. It’s good that the Oulton club remember me and invite me down on their behalf.

“I started my Challenge Cup career at Oulton away against Leigh Miners back in 2006. To start at that point and go on to taste success with Leeds is such an amazing feeling.”

Oliver Holmes said: “It was a great experience to be at Oulton tonight having never seen a cup draw live before. All the fans were so passionate.

“I was praying for Ryan to pull the Normanton home ball out and he did. I remember them playing Shaw Cross a few years ago as the Knights battled for promotion so it’ll be good to see them play again.”

Twenty clubs drawn from the community game and Armed Forces will be looking to progress to the third round when all 14 League 1 teams enter the competition. All second round games will be played over the weekend of February 14 and February 15.

The final will be played at Wembley Stadium on Saturday August 29, 120 years to the day since Rugby League was founded at a meeting at the George Hotel in Huddersfield in 1895.

The Ladbrokes Challenge Cup second round draw in full is as follows:

Hunslet Warriors v West Hull

Wath Brow Hornets v Lock Lane

Hull Dockers v Walney Central

Kells v Nottingham Outlaws / Blackbrook

Elland v Egremont Rangers

Oulton Raiders v Valley Cougars

Widnes West Bank v Rochdale Mayfield

Siddal v Featherstone Lions / Queens

Normanton Knights v Shaw Cross Sharks / York Acorn

Skirlaugh v Royal Navy

The second round ties will be played over the weekend of February 14-15.
