Cougars and Blue Bulls aim for national finals

Both Valley Cougars and Bridgend Blue Bulls have big national semi-final matches this Saturday as they aim for Conference Grand Finals day in Coventry.

Both Valley Cougars and Bridgend Blue Bulls have big national semi-final matches this Saturday as they aim for Conference Grand Finals day in Coventry.

In the RFL Conference South competition, the Cougars have a home tie against Nottingham Outlaws at Blackwood RFC (kick-off 12.30pm) while in the division below, the Blue Bulls’ Harry Jepson Trophy semi-final against Jarrow Vikings is at the neutral venue of Sheffield Hallam University (kick-off TBC).

Cougars’ coach Paul Emanuelli is hoping that his side will do enough to reach their first ever national final.

“Saturday’s match brings a huge challenge,” he said. “We’ve had three extremelly tough games against them so far and I'm expecting more of the same.

“I've got one or two boys unavailable but nothing I didn't expect come this time of the year. I'm sure Nottingham are in a similar boat.

“I remember losing at this stage to Hemel a few years back and it's not nice, I'm far from looking ahead but we all know the target come full time Saturday is to be in the final next week.

“Blackwood RFC have been great in letting us use their facilities at such short notice and the Valley Cougars massively appreciate this.”

After their fine 36-14 win over Midlands runners-up Telford Raiders last week the Blue Bulls face a 220 mile trip to Sheffield, believed to be the longest in the history of the club.

The majority of last week's side are available for this match and the club is boosted by the return of twins Lewis and Lloyd Allen who are both in the Army and were called into work at short notice on the morning of the last match.
