Ystalyfera year 7 reach national semi-finals

Ysgol Gyfun Ystalyfera’s year 7 Rugby League side are just one step away from becoming the first ever Welsh schools side and first ever all Welsh speaking side to ever play at Wembley Stadium.

Ysgol Gyfun Ystalyfera’s year 7 Rugby League side are just one step away from becoming the first ever Welsh schools side and first ever all Welsh speaking side to ever play at Wembley Stadium.

This is after they won their national Champion Schools’ quarter-final match on Wednesday, beating Howard School of Effingham, Surrey 36-4.

Owain Lloyd-Hughes led the way for Ystalyfera with a hat-trick of tries while Geraint Edwards, Iestyn Hopkins, Henry Hall and Blake Davies all went over the whitewash once each as the Welsh cruised to victory.

Zach Young kicked four conversions.

Ioan Bebb, the former South Wales RL and Wales Student international, who played rugby union for Pontypool, Aberavon, Cross Keys, Llanelli and Cardiff, is their teacher and coach and he was delighted with the win.

“The first-half performance was outstanding,” he said. “We led 28-0 at the break and I don’t think they got into our 20 metre area in the first half.

“We’re now looking forward to the semi-final draw.”

Ystalyfera’s year 8 side are Wales’ only other remaining sides in the competition and they play their quarter-final match on May 13th away at Castleford Academy.

The year 7 boys Final is the only one to be played at Wembley. This match takes place on Saturday 23rd August immediately before two Super League sides compete in the Tetley’s Challenge Cup Final.

All other finals take place the day before at Richmond RUFC.
