South Wales under 16 Academy earned their first win of the season in a competitive game against a determined North East Thunder side who made the 600 mile round trip in a day.

The host built up a commanding lead with the score being 30-10 at half-time and were eventually 44-10 up but four tries from Thunder in the last quarter of the game made the final score 44-30.

Many players from each side were only playing their third match of Rugby League but despite this fact, there were a lot of skills on show from both sides.

It only took three minutes for the Welsh to take the lead when Ryan Davies scored in the corner.

Rhys Lloyd added to the score with a 60 metre run for the second try on nine minutes. Jordan Gilbert converted to make it 10-0.

Ryan Davies went under the sticks for the third try from the first set after kick-off before Thunder hit back through a Lewis Burbridge try that Fraser Boldy converted.

South Wales addressed the balance on 18 minutes. Cobi Green’s high bomb was well picked up by Connor Kowulok who did well to ground. Gilbert converted.

Following a lengthy break after Sion Jones went down with a bad knee injury, Lloyd added his second try and the fourth for the junior Scorps. The kick was missed and the score went to 24-6.

Burbridge added a second try for North East on 27 minutes, exploiting a gap on the left wing.

But South Wales again addressed the balance. Kowulok with his second try that Gilbert converted to make the half-time score 30-10.

The home side extended their lead four minutes into the second half when Kowulok scored in the left corner to complete his hat-trick.

George Mbofana added the eighth try for South Wales in the tenth minute of the second half before Dale Pryce took advantage of a loose ball to touch down under the sticks. Gilbert’s conversion made the score 44-10.

North East didn’t give up as their forward line started to dominate. After winning successive sets, Will Bentley stormed through for an unconverted try.

From kick-off his fellow prop Keiron Bruce used his strength to score under the sticks which Boldy converted to bring the score back to 44-20.

With seven minutes to go, Bentley then added Thunder’s fifth of the day with Boldy converting.

Bruce looked like he was going to get his second as well but he was stopped with a high tackle. From the penalty, Burbridge ran over for his hat-trick to complete the scoring in a thoroughly entertaining encounter.
