Challenge Cup in Cardiff on Tuesday

The Rugby League Challenge Cup trophy will be at Grangetown Library this Tuesday 8th April as two of Cardiff's local heroes are honoured.

This is the first of four ‘Local Heroes’ presentations that are aimed at highlighting great sportsmen and women from Cardiff who grew out of their locality to become major stars.

Throughout 2014 Cardiff is celebrating the status of being the European Capital of Sport and, as part of the celebrations, the Cardiff ECOS team has linked with local libraries and schools to highlight the achievements of local sporting talent.

The first group of ‘Local Heroes’ will be Frank and George Whitcombe, two brothers who grew up in Grangetown and became highly successful professional sportsmen. Frank played rugby league for Wales and Great Britain, while George played football for Cardiff City and Port Vale and captained Wales at baseball.

Their incredible sporting lives will be brought back to life by members of their family, trophies and other sporting ephemera that will be displayed on the night. It promises to be a fitting tribute to two Grangetown greats!

WHAT: Cardiff ECOS ‘Local Heroes’ tribute

WHEN: Tuesday, 8 April, 6.30pm for 7.00pm start (9.00pm finish)
