WALES GO DOWN TO WORLD CUP DEFEAT

WARD AND HUGHES SCORE WELSH TRIES

STUDENT WORLD CUP

ENGLAND 46 WALES 12

ENGLAND'S dominant first half display was enough to beat Wales, ultimately convincingly, in front of a crowd of over 450. The hosts showed their dominance from the start with full back Mark Wilson producing a cunning cut out pass to winger Billy Griffiths who dived over in the corner, Chris Atkin converting.

A minute later, Jay Rossi was on the end of a Will Collins break, supported by Atkin, who missed the conversion and Wilson then finished off a flowing move to extend England’s lead to 14-0 in a dominant opening 15 minutes.

Collins and Griffiths combined to find space on the outside of the Welsh defence with Griffiths squeezing in to score in the corner, Atkin again converting from the touchline. And, after weathering a period of strong Welsh defence, England half back Alistair Leak managed to find a gap to burrow his way over from close range.

Wales hit back after the break and offered a glimmer of hope, second rower Mike Ward crashing over, Callum Bennett converting but England made the most of the rising penalty count as Atkin kicked a goal to take the margin to 20 points.

Home prop Nathan Britten forced his way over and England ended with a flourish as a strong carry and offload from Chris Barratt sent Lee Sanders in and Barratt then intercepted a speculative Welsh pass.

Gareth Hynes put Rossi in at the corner for his second but Wales managed a consolation score in the final minute, Tom Hughes finishing off a well worked set play and Bennett goaling.

There was still time for Richard Hughes to take advantage of some tired Welsh defence with his side’s ninth try.
