MEET THE TEAM: Michael Channing

Next up in our series of "MEET THE TEAM" is London Broncos centre Michael Channing.

Born in Guildford in Surrey, Channing started out in rugby union and was in the academy set-ups at Aviva Premiership clubs Harlequins and London Irish.

Switching codes to rugby league at the age of 18, he was given his breakthrough with London Broncos when he was handed his debut against Hull Kingston Rovers in April 2012.

From that point onwards, he became a more regular face during the 2012 campaign for London, who were in Super League at the time.

After 12 appearances for the Broncos in 2013, he joined Castleford Tigers on loan for the later stage of the season.

His four performances while on loan led to a permanent move to The Jungle, where he signed a two-year deal.

In 2014, he made 16 appearances in all as the Tigers finished fourth in Super League and came runners-up to Leeds Rhinos in the Challenge Cup.

Ten appearances for the Yorkshire club followed in 2015, along with seven matches on dual-registration with York City Knights, before Channing made the move to Featherstone Rovers.

While at Featherstone, who finished fourth in the Championship and then eighth in the Super 8s Qualifiers in 2016, he made 12 appearances.

After three-and-a-half years in Yorkshire, it was time for him to head back down south and he rejoined London Broncos on a two-year deal for 2017.

Ahead of this season, however, the club announced that Channing would go under the knife with a cervical spine fusion to remove a damaged disk.

According to Channing, it was an operation that has "allowed me to continue playing the game I love".

As a result of the surgery, it wasn't until May that he made his second debut for the London club.

However, since he took to the field against Oldham, he hasn't looked back, is enjoying his rugby and has featured regularly.

Since deciding to take up rugby league, Channing has gained valuable experience in a number of different environments.

As well as playing in the capital closer to home, he has felt what it is like to play rugby league in a heartland area.

Now he has returned from injury and is doing what he does best, he will want to be on John Kear's squad list for Rugby League World Cup 2017 this autumn.
