It was a step too far for Ysgol Gyfun Ystalyfera as they went down 46-0 to St Peter’s of Wigan in the Champion Schools Year 8 Final in Richmond on Friday.

After easily beating St John Fisher, 42-18, in the semi-final, Ystalyfera couldn’t make it a Wigan double as four tries from Umyla Hanley, son of the former international Ellery, led the way for St Peter’s.

They took the lead in the sixth minute with Hanley’s first, before the same player jinxed through again on 15 minutes. Sammy Glover converted both.

Hanley ran through for his hat-trick four minutes later after Sam Burns released him through the centre with a pass bordering on forward. Glover had an easy conversion to make the score 18-0.

The fourth came straight from kick-off as Burns switched from creator to scorer.  An outstanding conversion from Glover made the score 24-0.

And just before half-time, Joe Charnock twisted his way through for St Peter’s fifth, again converted by Burns. 30-0 to the Wigan side at the break.

Ten minutes into the second half and a try in the corner from Taylor Sadler-Flude that went unconverted.

Not helped by losing out on most of the 50-50 decisions from the match officials, something that infuriated the Welsh school’s coaching staff, Ystalyfera were downhearted and they let Hanley in for his fourth try that Glover converted to make the score 40-0.

Sadler-Flude followed him over for his second that Glover converted to make the final score 46-0.
